Abortion

Oregon Is Overly Focused on Death

Currently, in the State of Oregon, the killing of innocent children and infants are permissible by law. This is because Oregon does not recognize the dignity of the human person. As of 2024, the so-called “right to abortion” has no limitations or restrictions. The Oregon government has made a point to advertise abortion as a positive action and recognize it to be “safe, accessible, and legal in Oregon.” This should not be the case anywhere for whatever reason a person might have. No matter if a human is inside or outside the womb, they are still an individual that God created, made in His image and likeness, with human dignity. In the act of abortion, that dignity is violated. As a state, we may not ever be able to make abortion illegal ultimately. Still, we can work toward making it less accessible and providing support for mothers who are having an unplanned pregnancy.

For instance, for abortion in “Oregon, there are no gestational limits, no waiting periods, and you can access abortion pills by mail.” Although we may not be able to get rid of abortion altogether, we can still work to put limits on it. So, instead of allowing abortion until birth, the state of Oregon could only permit abortion up until a certain point, such as eight weeks. Although this would enable some abortions, it would also decrease the number of late-term abortions, therefore causing people to see that there is life inside the womb.

Another thing Oregon could do to help increase the dignity of life in Oregon is to mandate pregnancy conciliations and show the ultrasound during those appointments. This will help the mother determine the best choice for her and the child as well as the alternative options such as adoption and where they can seek help. In addition to this, when a woman sees the ultrasound, the risk of an abortion decreases because the woman can now see what she could end. She could end the little life inside her that has most of the same qualities and traits that she does. Her eyes are now opened to the fact that an actual being is in the body. As a result, it is very unlikely that the woman would still want to terminate the pregnancy and end the child’s life.

A significant factor in the decision to have an abortion is because the mother does not feel that she has adequate resources to raise their child. However, Oregon could provide more pregnancy clinics and offer them easy access to resources. For example, the government could provide pamphlets in hospitals and the phone numbers of the pregnancy clinics to make them more accessible to pregnant women who find themselves in situations where they might not know what to do. To ensure that the clinics can help all the mothers, children, and families, the state could help provide funding. That funding would be able to go toward food, clothing, blankets, and financial support for the families.

In conclusion, although it may seem impossible to transform Oregon into a state that acknowledges the values of life, with small baby steps, we can begin to make that transformation and open the eyes of people to see the dignity of human life.
